Hip hop legend Masta Ace rolled through Victoria last night with for the monthly hip hop event at Distrikt Nightclub, hosted by The Lyrics Initiative. Ace has been in the game since the late 80’s, appearing on the classic Juice Crew cut “The Symphony” and has put out countless records since, both as a solo artist and in multiple groups.
Stricklin and Ace are two of three members of the group eMC, and they kept the energy alive in the building well past the 2am closing time of Distrikt. Masta Ace had everyone put their peace fingers in the air and take a moment of silence for the late Phife Dawg at one point, and then continued to spit over some Tribe beats, much to the delight of the audience. Mixing in more samples from various artists and keeping to his classics, there was a great mix of song selection throughout the evening. All in all it was a fantastic show, and I certainly am looking forward to the next show the Lyrics Initiative puts on.
